Higher and higher!

Good evening, Campers! It’s Silver Cliche’ with you again. Tonight’s report is being dashed off from Fort Tuthill County Park in Flagstaff, Arizona!

Before I post a quick recap of the day, let me wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms! Double best wishes to my own mom who is following along with us from Clark’s Summit, Pennsylvania and the mother of my 3 children who is about 15’ away from me right now. She’d probably try to be 20’ away after our drive today, but that’s physically impossible in our tiny home. Without all the moms... well... geez... there wouldn’t be any of us. Good job, moms!

So, the day unfolded precisely as planned. It was hot in Tucson, hotter in Phoenix (I saw 96 on the truck thermometer) at about 1,000 feet elevation then we started to climb. By the time we reached Fort Tuthill (6,985 feet according to my altimeter) it was 73. Now at 9:20 PM local time it’s 55 and dropping like a stone.

The geography changed dramatically, too. We started in the Santa Catalina Mountains of Tucson (see pics in the last few days posts). We headed north into the “valley of the sun”. I had never driven all the way through the Phoenix area. The valley was larger and flatter than I recalled from a couple of trips in and out via air, with less separation between the major population centers that comprise metro-Phoenix. It’s a sprawl in the desert! There were still plenty of Saguaro cacti until we were well past Phoenix.

Mrs. C’ kept taking pics throughout the drive. Here’s a progression for you:

That’s desert, high desert then temperate forest up here near Flagstaff... all within 150 miles.

We stopped for a late lunch at a rest area on I-17 between Phoenix and Flagstaff:

For the first time we saw signs pointing the way to California.

So, tomorrow is a chill day. We hope you enjoy yours, too!

Later...
