Today was our first day "off the road". We structured this trip that way... where every few days we stay put, meet the locals, recharge our batteries (the trailer recharges constantly) and catch our breath.
So, let's start at the end. I just wrapped up some pics of the sunset over the Tennessee Tombigbee waterway (or as we now know the locals call it... the Tenn-Tom). It was a splendid one. Here is the very first pic after the sun sank below the treeline.
I think I'll post the full sized version of that on Flickr. You can find our Flickr pics at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/131457232@N02/
Being the lazy campers that we are, we started the day right... with coffee, breakfast and 2 1/2 hours of lounging in our PJs and reading. I can tell you, a slug has it pretty good.
After that, a short bike ride featuring Romeo (the Puggle) riding in the basket of Mrs. Cliche's bike. We met the world's largest horsefly (roughly the size of a Chickadee) which removed a piece of Mrs. Cliche's right shoulder through the shirt, threatened to carry Romeo away to it's aerie. Our ride was cut short.
After a recovery period and more relaxation we decided to rub elbows with the locals. Off we went to the nearest metropolis... Tupelo, MS. We headed right to the top rated restaurant in town (Woody's Tupelo Steakhouse) having been reassured by Google that it was serving lunch from noon to 1:30 and discovered that it was closed until dinner. Note that dinner in Tupelo begins at 4:30. Seeing as how we are from Florida, the state that invented the senior - early bird - all you can eat buffet, we actually considered waiting there until 4:30... but decided to find other fare and other sites.
We quickly learned that anyone who spends more that 45 minutes in Tupelo will be informed that its lasting claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of.... Elvis Presley. After lunch (not to be mentioned) and some shopping we included a drive-by of the birthplace on the way out of town. I am certainly aware that the term "birthplace of a king" sometimes implies a modest surrounding (think: a manger in Bethlehem). This certainly fits the mold. Here's a shot from Mrs. Cliche's iPad taken through the open window of the Tundra as we reverently passed by:
Anyway... after that we headed back to the trailer... the dogs and more slovenly behavior. I elected not to post the pic Mrs. Cliche sent of me eating. When she took it and looked at it she said "this will make a nice addition to your Blog". I thought "how thoughtful of her to make a contribution". When I saw the pic just now I realized that what she meant is "you should eat less and dress better but I'll let this pic say that for you". I'll spare you the experience I just had.
Anyway... tomorrow its off to Powhatan, Arkansas. There are only three states on this trip that are new additions to my "visit all 50 states" project. We are in one now (Mississippi) will be in another tomorrow evening (Arkansas) and hitting the third on the way home from Yellowstone (South Dakota).
Later, Campers!
